Time to take care of you and not be late

 

I find that most mornings tend to be about choices—eat breakfast at the table vs. hair in ponytail, or hair down and styled vs. eat breakfast in the car, or dry shampoo vs. making that smoothie for breakfast before the berries go bad—and that’s coming from me, who is a proclaimed morning person. It’s true. I love mornings and typically get up fairly early, yet still find that I pull out the door the same time every morning no matter what choices I make. Pack lunches the night before? Check—tried that. Take a shower the night before? Check—tried that, but I didn’t really like it. I enjoy the fresh feeling each morning and, if we get down to the nitty gritty, I simply cannot stand the prickly leg issue by mid-afternoon.

Really, most mornings are not that hectic. I have a routine, and it seems to work. The problem is that my routine does not include me taking more than 10 minutes getting ready, excluding bath or shower. And, while the result is, eh, enough to pass at the office, it’s nothing to write home about. However, on those days where, perhaps, the kids don’t have school and I have an extra 30 minutes (automatically the start of a fantastic day!), I find that spending a little more time on my hair, or makeup or outfit really lifts my confidence and overall attitude. I feel better about myself.

A simple search of the internet will give you a plethora of hacks that may or may not work for you. If they do, awesome—go for it! Every minute counts. Here are a few of my favorites that have, so far, helped me take care of me and still make sure each child gets to school with matching socks.

  1. Skip washing your hair every morning

If you don’t like taking a shower the night before, like me, then try skipping your morning hair wash. I have even gone so far as to wash my hair only the night before, then take a bath the next morning to get that fresh-clean feeling to start your day. If it’s the second, or maybe even the third day of skipping your morning wash, always take advantage of dry shampoo. I am a huge fan for a quick hair pick-me-up.

  1. Use a mouse or spray on dry hair.

I most definitely do not wash my hair every day, and use dry shampoo whenever I can. The problem is that I find dry shampoo to require me to brush my hair out which removes its natural waves. On days I do not use dry shampoo, i have found that adding a mousse or texturizing spray to my dry hair, then scrunching throughout, provides just the right amount of style with very little effort.

  1. Prepare the nigh before

I do occasionally pack lunches the night before, and it does save a few minutes. Lately, however, I have found it to be a huge stress reliever to have everyone’s bags packed, including my office bag, and setting by the door. I have even gone so far to put them in the car (in the garage, of course). When the weather is very cold in the middle of winter, I have even put lunches in the  car ready to go. No judgment please—it works.

  1. Keep essentials in the car and/or at the office

There are some items that you need on a regular basis throughout the day. I have found that keeping extras in the car and at the office has saved me the hassle of needing to collect them each day, or as I need them. Likely what I love most is that I do not really have to think about them anymore. They are removed from my “mental checklist.” For example, I keep a phone charger in my car and at the office. No more are the days of my phone battery dying by 10:00am and I left my charger at home on the counter. I keep lotion and perfume at the office, in my desk drawer. I keep an extra deodorant in my purse and in my desk drawer—yes, I do occasionally forget that step in my routine (easy to do when your trying to convince your son that it really is okay that he is wearing superman underwear and batman socks at the same time!) When I used to wear contacts, I would keep extra disposable contacts in the car and at the office. Oh, the days of forgetting my glasses and losing one contact. I learned that one the hard way.

Perhaps makeup is your challenge. Try keeping some extra makeup at the office and take 5 minutes in the car before walking in to finish up. Hair trouble? Keep hairspray in the car, or in your desk drawer. Just because you did not do it before you walked out the door does not mean you cannot do it later. Squeeze it in. If you try, you may find that you have a few extra minutes here and there that you could spend on yourself. My point is that you can save yourself some headache and stress by thinking ahead, and being prepared for the “norms” that make up your life.

  1.   Don’t wait to get gas in the morning

This is a short one, and while really beauty related, it is a huge one in my book: Take the time to put gas in your car on the weekend, or the night before. Truthfully, I cannot say that I have mastered this one. What I can say is that when I have talked myself out of filling up in the evening (usually, “I am just too tired”), I have always regretted it the following morning. The best option is to make sure your tank is ready to go by Sunday evening to get your week off to a great start. If this is not possible, then your second best option is to take a few minutes in the evenings (or maybe during lunch break) to keep gas in your car. Those extra few minutes can be spent helping you look and feel your best. You deserve it.
